The Roman History section will be showing the film directed by Edward Bazalgette"Hannibal, Rome's Nightmare", broadcast on BBC in 2006.
As its name suggests, the film depicts Hannibal Barca, the famous Carthaginian. Heavily inspired by Titus Livius (books XXI to XXV), the film takes us to 218 BC, when Sagonte, a Spanish city under Roman protectorate, is besieged by Hannibal Barca's Carthaginian troops. This triggered a game of alliances, as Rome considered Sagonte to be outside the zone of Carthaginian influence because it was allied with Rome, while the Carthaginians asserted their rights over the city, which lay within the zone resulting from the division of the Iber Treaty.
Hannibal ignored Roman warnings and finally took over the city, which he later burned to the ground, with civilians inside (Livy, Book XXI). Rome and Carthage went to war. Hannibal Barca, Magon and Hasdrubal, along with Mâarbal, decide from Spain how to proceed. Suddenly, Hannibal presents his daring idea to the assembly...
