First building by these two architects. The building is a veritable manifesto in terms of its radical, deceptively simple legibility, rigorous materials (raw concrete, aluminum and industrial materials), the lines and shapes used, smooth facades and agricultural-type greenhouses to the south and north to provide both visual and thermal protection (using bougainvillea and bamboo). The polycarbonate greenhouses, while protecting the user from external aggression, provide a colorful and impressionistic vision that varies with the seasons. The use of these materials meant that construction costs were kept to a minimum, making it possible to build more square meters.
The Lacaton et Vassal practice subsequently distinguished itself with the renovation of the Palais de Tokyo in Paris and the ongoing creation of the Nantes School of Architecture. Lectures given by these architects all over the world have enabled the ARSH building to acquire a definite international reputation.
In 1999, architects Anne Lacaton and Jean Philippe Vassal were awarded the Grand Prix d'Architecture Jeune Talent by the French Minister of Culture.
