Friday, April 7, 2023 - 12pm - Interview with Élodie Oriol, lecturer in modern history

Her areas of research include:
18th-century Rome: urban, social and cultural history, the history of patronage and cultural practices in modern Europe, the economy and material culture of the performing arts (theater, music, dance) in modern Italy, and the reconstruction and valorization of musical heritage (17th-18th centuries).

She will present her book"Vivre de la musique à Rome au XVIIIe siècle", published by the École française de Rome.
Dedicated to the study of musical professions in eighteenth-century Rome, the book is part of a social history perspective. It offers the reader a panorama of the places and institutions associated with the practice of music, from chapels to theaters, aristocratic palaces and public squares. Drawing on a wide range of documentation, the author highlights the structural specificities of Roman musical life and the driving forces behind its appeal. Drawing on recent advances in labor history and the history of cultural practices, the approach combines quantitative analyses and reconstructions of individual career paths to understand how the institutional and social frameworks of musical practice conditioned the careers of male and female musicians. The study of rivalries and strong economic, social and symbolic disparities observed in this professional milieu contributes to our understanding of the social and artistic transformations of the 18th century. By varying the scales of observation, we shed light on the changes that marked this period, from the point of view of cultural production and consumption, artistic practices and social positioning.
