Interview with Bernard Fort, audio naturalist, who will present the collaborative work "Listening to Birds and the Sounds of Nature"
“Birdsong heralds joy and contentment with one’s own existence. […] Birdsong, which cannot be reduced to any musical rule, seems to contain greater freedom (…).”
Emmanuel KANT Critique of Judgment 1790
“Listening to Birds and the Sounds of Nature” is a thoughtful book dedicated to a practice that remains underappreciated: audio-naturalism. Originating in the 1960s with Jean Roché, founder of the French school of listening to living things, audio-naturalism has made sound a true tool for understanding natural environments, long before the concept of biodiversity became a central topic in public discourse. At the intersection of science, art, and philosophy, this book traces the origins, founding figures, and contemporary developments of this discipline, from the embodied listening to soundscapes to the emergence of ecoacoustics. Bringing together naturalists, sound recordists, researchers, artists, and philosophers, this work explores soundscapes. It examines the techniques, modes of expression, and ethical issues surrounding listening, while situating audio-naturalism within major contemporary reflections on the living world.
This book is intended for anyone who wishes to understand, through the ear, what connects humans to the living world—and why learning to listen is today an act of knowledge, responsibility, and transmission.
