Bachelor of Philosophy
Since its beginnings in antiquity, philosophy has taken many different forms. But it can be defined as the effort to freely question the truth and value of discourse, which in law can relate to any area of human experience or activity. It's about learning to think for oneself: not to flatter one's own opinions, but to practice rational criticism and discussion, questioning the meaning, justification and inadequacies of common or learned ideas.
This is why the study of philosophy is divided into different fields or domains organized around fundamental notions (art, science, political power, the mind, language, justice...) and problems. As the historical dimension is also important, these studies include a study of the history of philosophy and its great authors (Plato, Descartes, Hume, Spinoza, Kant, Wittgenstein...).
Lessons learned
The bachelor's degree program at UGA is designed to cover all the fundamental areas of philosophical thought: political and moral philosophy, philosophy of knowledge and science, philosophy of language, logic, aesthetics, and the history of philosophy (ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary). It also includes assiduous study of a modern language and a number of special options.
Throughout the three years of the degree program, students are guided towards autonomy and the formulation of a personal project, with the possibility of completing a validated internship.
A demanding, versatile general education
The pursuit of philosophy's universal ambition requires the cultivation of invaluable intellectual virtues: clarity of expression, rigor of conceptual analysis and reasoning, precision and breadth of general culture, autonomy of thought and a sense of problem-solving. These qualities are valuable in their own right. But the study of philosophy also provides excellent general intellectual training that can be put to good use in other, more applied fields.
The Philosophy/Modern Literature double bachelor's degree
The modern literature/philosophy double degree corresponds to a
excellent training enabling motivated students with good work capacity to acquire and master the fundamentals of two disciplines. This is a double curriculum organized jointly by UFR ARSH and UFR LLASIC (Language, Literature and Performing Arts, Information and Communication).
The timetable is designed to enable students to follow all the basic courses of the 2 bachelor's degrees, and to obtain 2 diplomas at the end of the 3 years of validated training. Students can switch to either license at any time during the course, provided they have passed the year's courses.
In philosophy, courses cover all the fundamental areas of philosophical reflection: political and moral philosophy, philosophy of knowledge and science, philosophy of language, logic, aesthetics, history of philosophy (ancient, medieval, modern, contemporary). The aim is to give students the conceptual tools to think about the world we face.
The letters provide a solid grounding in French literature and language (e.g. literary genres, overview of the French language, learning to read literature, texts and contexts from the Renaissance to modern times) and ancient languages and literature (study of Greek and Latin languages and civilizations).
Philosophy/Classics double degree
This dual degree puts the emphasis on
on classicsThese courses provide a solid grounding in the literature and language of antiquity (Latin and Greek), as well as in French literature. The aim is to give students the analytical and linguistic tools they need to study literature from different periods and cultural areas. Philosophy courses provide a solid grounding in the literature and languages of antiquity (Latin and Greek), as well as in French literature. The aim is to give students the analytical and linguistic tools they need to study literature from different periods and cultural areas. The Philosophy/Classics double degree leads to masters degrees in philosophy or literature, and prepares students for all types of studies related to antiquity.
Master of Philosophy
The Master's in Philosophy benefits from its large number of students, a size that encourages interaction, individualized support from a team of teacher-researchers who are present and committed to students, and good working conditions on the UFR ARSH premises, close to the documentation, in the exceptional setting of the Grenoble campus.
It trains students in the art of argumentation, through the preparation of a two-year dissertation, and enables them to benefit from the ongoing research of team members and the activities of the Institut de Philosophie de Grenoble, our research center, preparing them either for further study or for professional integration based on the skills they have acquired.
3 routes are available:
The "Philosophy and History of Philosophy" course is based on the conviction that one cannot be practiced without the other.
The course's pedagogical objective is the acquisition of transferable skills through the production of a personal research project, accompanied by a teacher-researcher from the IPhiG laboratory, and the teaching of methods.
The "Philosophy of Cognition" program is an integral part of the Grenoble research community devoted to cognition. It demonstrates the contribution of philosophy to the cognitive sciences, one of the most active fields of research in recent decades. Training seminars and research seminars support the two-year preparation of an original personal dissertation demonstrating the skills acquired.
The program is also part of Grenoble's TransCoG thematic program (as part of the Graduate school@uga), and is eligible for enrolment. It offers students an introduction to the various disciplines that study cognition, as well as a solid philosophical grounding in the subject.
In addition to specializing in the history of ancient philosophy, the course provides an introduction to the various sciences that make up the "sciences of antiquity": history, literature and civilization of the ancient worlds, as well as in-depth mastery of at least one ancient language, essential in this field for pursuing a doctorate. However, it is not confined to the "royal road" of teaching and research, and can also lead to the following professions: heritage coordinator, curator, documentary researcher, cultural and press attaché, cultural advisor, tour guide, cultural mediator, publishing assistant or secretary.
PhiloPolis - Philosophical Dialogue in the City" university diploma
The "Practices of philosophical dialogue in the city" university diploma (DU PhiloPolis) is the fruit of collaboration between the philosophy department and researchers from the LiDiLEM laboratory, who have been working for some ten years on the conditions and manifestations of reflective thinking in philosophical research communities (CRP).
It's the only DU in France in this field to be run by a philosophy department, thus guaranteeing its philosophical roots.
Collaboration with linguists, specialists in verbal interaction, provides complementary skills for understanding and analyzing this form of dialogue.
Delivered exclusively atUniversité Grenoble Alpes , this program is designed to provide specific skills in leading philosophical dialogues, based on in-depth knowledge of philosophy and the development of professional skills in leading dialogues.
What's more, our DU is supported by a network of local players interested in workshop practices: schools, art scenes, popular education players, local authorities. These partners make it possible to offer internships to people enrolled in the program. It is also looking for trained speakers to lead philosophical dialogues, which it can employ once the DU has been validated.
At the end of this course, you'll be able to work with a wide range of audiences, taking into account the diversity and specificity of each context.
