The Physics/Musicology double degree

Presentation Training
Why a double degree in Physics and Musicology?

As music is an acoustic phenomenon, the relationship between science and music is rich and profound, so much so that medieval teaching classified music theory as a science, alongside arithmetic, geometry and astronomy.

Université Grenoble Alpes offers a double degree in Physics and Musicology. This allows students to obtain both a musicology degree and a physics degree in three years.
The teaching of the two licenses is streamlined to enable students to follow both courses, but the musical and scientific levels obtained are identical to those of the single licenses.

This double degree takes 3 years to complete, and is divided into 6 semesters. Students follow a set of courses in both fields:

  • Science: teaching focuses on physics, mathematics and mechanics
  • In musicology: courses cover the history of music (from the Middle Ages to contemporary music), analysis of works, musical training, writing (musical composition), keyboard accompaniment and choir.

The curriculum also includes language courses, as well as cross-disciplinary courses in acoustics, computer music and sound processing.
The training is demanding: it comprises around 27 hours of weekly classes, to which must be added a considerable amount of personal work. In particular, students must practice and listen to a wide variety of musical styles on a daily basis.
During the course of the degree, it is possible to return to a simple degree in physics or musicology, with the semesters already completed remaining acquired.
