The 2026 Roman Epigraphy Workshop in Rome aims to provide intermediate-level training in epigraphic sources, with a focus on Roman epigraphy.
This session of the EpiRom epigraphy workshop is intended for students who: 
  • have experience with Latin;
  • have attained a level of proficiency in epigraphy that allows them to read, transcribe, translate, and interpret inscriptions; are familiar with the basic bibliography and have gained an overview of the diversity of epigraphic sources;
  • feel the need to further their knowledge of Latin epigraphy in order to continue their research.
During this session, the following topics will be covered: public signage (the imperial class and the two higher social classes of Roman society, particularly from a prosopographic perspective), epigraphy of trades, funerary epigraphy (complex), the religious epigraph.
Special attention will be given to the electronic publication of epigraphic corpora.
The thematic school will be organized into sessions of classes in the morning and workshops in the afternoon (for example, at the Museo Nazionale Romano (Baths of Diocletian) and the Celio Archaeological Park).
The workshops will be conducted in French and Italian, A sufficient knowledge of both languages is required.

For whom?

This call is open to first-year and second-year master’s students, as well as doctoral students, but he is also open to third-year students who can demonstrate a sufficient level of proficiency in Latin and epigraphy, as evidenced by a degree or a letter of recommendation. 
Applications will be reviewed without giving priority to any specific level of education.
Required level : Level 2 - Intermediate (experience with Latin)

Practical details

The thematic school is will take place in Rome from July 13 to July 17, 2026.
Participants will be housed at the French School in Rome residence on Piazza Navona in single or double rooms. Lunch is provided (and participants may use the residence’s communal kitchen in the evenings).
Participants are responsible for their own travel expenses; they may contact their laboratory or doctoral program to inquire about potential funding.

Composition of the application file

  • application form (see box "TO APPLY" below);
  • cover letter explaining the role of this thematic school in the study or research project;
  • a letter of recommendation from a faculty member (master’s program director, thesis advisor, academic advisor, etc.)
