Discover collaborations between composers and directors in his latest collective work: Compositeurs et réalisateurs en duo - Dix-sept études musico-filmiques. Edited by Cécile Carayol and Jérôme Rossi
The book's seventeen musico-filmic studies attempt to identify the stylistic traits that distinguish duos between directors and composers across the diversity of their works.
Creative duos, particularly in the case of directors and composers, are often idealized, and expressions such as "perfect chords", "fusional relationship", tandem, brothers, couple... are commonplace.
This book attempts to go beyond this to explore the notion of duo, proposing several stages, from collaboration "in the service of collective emotion", where creativity remains subject to the imperatives of entertainment and profitability, to "cinemusical alchemy", where the duo is gradually led to elaborate a musico-filmic poetics of its own.
Seventeen musico-filmic studies isolate the founding stylistic musical principles of a duo, including in its evolution, in order to detect continuities beyond the diversity of films. They cover an international corpus of both popular and auteur cinema, from the Georges Franju/Maurice Jarre duo to Christopher Nolan/Hans Zimmer, via Jean-Daniel Pollet/Antoine Duhamel and Hayao Miyazaki/Joe Hisaishi.
